Discussions of performance measurement in the nonprofit world typically focus on service providing organisations, often linking this to the accountability demands of funders. This paper focuses on performance measurement as it impinges on funders and, in particular, grantmaking foundations. This focus not only addresses a neglected area and rounds the picture of a concentration on grant recipients, but also highlights some fascinating, more fundamental, questions about the link between accountability, performance measurement, resource dependency and isomorphism, about uncertainty, about agency and theories of causality.
