The Trailblazer’s Network

Saturday, January 24, 2009 – 9:45 a.m.

Barbara J. Cohn Berman

Barbara J. Cohn Berman has worked in government, nonprofit organizations and in the private sector. She is Vice President of the Fund for the City of New York and the Fund’s sister organization, the National Center for Civic Innovation. She is the founding director of the Center on Municipal Government Performance which serves both organizations. Since 1995, her Center has brought the public’s perspective to government performance measurement and reporting and captured the interest of cities across the nation and beyond. Her book, Listening to the Public: Adding the Voices of the People to Government Performance Measurement and Reporting (2005) describes the Center’s methodology and work. She also directs the Government Performance Reporting Trailblazer Program. So far, this program has encouraged 47 governments in the U.S. and Canada to listen to people who live and work in their communities, learn how they assess their local government’s performance, consider aligning performance measures with the public’s point of view and disseminate performance reports that are relevant to the public’s interests and needs.
