The first installment of a three part series on Measuring for Engagement and Participation

Collecting and reporting community data serves many important organizing functions, including needs assessment, planning and resource allocation, and the engagement of residents and other stakeholders. This webinar is the first in a three-part series focused on the Collection and Reporting of Community Data, and its focus is on the decision of what to measure and why for a given project. Topics will include different theories for measuring, as well as the implications of varying kinds, uses, and users of data. Participants will learn the specific problems and opportunities associated with developing a community-data collection and reporting project.   Parts two and three of the series will focus on the logistical issues of building a community-data project and the issues of professional responsibility, ethics, and risk that will arise when managing a community-data project.

To illustrate and explain critical lessons in developing a community-data project, Dr. Jett will share his experience creating the Gentilly Project - a mapping project designed to support neighborhood restoration and economic development after catastrophic disasters. The project demonstrated the feasibility and value of address-level mapping by residents and volunteers, and it has mapped 10 square miles of post-Katrina New Orleans, including the Gentilly District and the Lower Ninth Ward. Dr. Jett's project has been recognized by The Times-Picayune in New Orleans as a significant means to inform decisions of residential return and investment in the city, and its results have been cited by The New York Times. Most significantly, the project has inspired local mapping efforts led by community groups and local non-profit organizations within the city. The three-part series will use Dr. Jett's experience in New Orleans with the Gentilly Project as a backdrop to illustrate many of these concepts that face a municipality when beginning a data collection effort.

Quintus R. Jett is an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University-Newark, where he is a faculty member in the School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) in conjunction with The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (CUEED). Dr. Jett received his doctorate from Stanford University's School of Engineering in the field of Organizational Studies, with a focus on innovation and management in high-tech industries. Applying insights from this field, he has focused his research on the design of organizations that must be responsive to changing technology, growing diversity, and other significant environmental changes. Dr. Jett has taught courses in entrepreneurship, public service, operations management, and statistics.
