Performance teams lead county to achievement award

This article first appeared in the Altavista Journal, by Tina Barbour, August 11, 2010

Campbell County was one of the recipients of the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) 2010 Achievement Awards, which recognize model local government programs, according to a VACo media release.

The county won in the organizational development category for its submission "Performance Improvement Teams-Employee Driven Long-Term Planning." It also received the Best Achievement award, beating out the 12 other category winners.

VACo received 60 submissions in the statewide, competitive contest.

Campbell County Administrator David Laurrell said last week he and other county officials were very pleased with the award.

"It's nice to be recognized like that, and recognized statewide," he said.

The award brings with it "the satisfaction of knowing we're doing a great job," he said, giving the Board of Supervisors and county staff credit for the win.

In the media release, Lane Ramsey, former Chesterfield County administrator and one of the judges in the contest, said, "It is admirable for a county Campbell's size to create a comprehensive high-performance model, one that is transferable to small and large counties alike. Campbell County's program has been in place since 1999, and usually these types of models come and go. But this program has endured and that is a testament to its strength and productivity."

According to a program description included with the media release, Campbell County has a leadership team made up of department heads, county administrator and county attorney. This team identifies issues and areas of the county where improvements could be made.  read more
